Dr Fortuno

A lot of online slots take inspiration from popular culture and I believe Yggdrasil’s Dr Fortuno has decided to piggyback off Hugh Jackman’s amazing success in The Greatest Showman. Set in the Victorian era, Dr Fortuno is leading his marquee-covered circus into a bizarre performance, promising riches beyond your wildest dreams. This is a circus of mystique and human phenomenon, so fear not animal lovers, you won’t find any caged elephants here.

This 5 reel, 20 payline slot is peddling sophisticated entertainment at the top end of the scale. But can we trust the hype? Or is this Dr Fortuno yet another charlatan preying on the gullible public? Let’s find out.

Final Verdict

Beautifully designed with genuine effort put into creating a compelling storyline.
The game offers free spins with multiple special features.
The jackpot is generous and you could potentially win it multiple times.

The theme is pretty eerie and creepy, so it might not be right for those looking for light-hearted fun.
Landing the Wheel on the Jackpot isn’t easy, and even then it doesn’t guarantee you the prize.
The stacked Wilds aren’t as rewarding as they promise to be.

Theme and Background

Dr Fortuno leans heavily on people’s fascination with the obscure and grotesque, and with this comes a suitably eerie soundtrack. It’s reminiscent of those old Victorian nursery rhymes which inadvertently send shivers down your spine.

A lot of work has gone into the game design and it shows. The video slot’s graphics and animations are some of the best I’ve ever seen, and I was immediately hooked on the theme. Everything is strictly in keeping with the Victorian circus ambience.

But is the game itself one of Dr Fortuno’s tricks, shrouding us in the dark glamour of it all and causing us to take our eyes off the prize? No, despite appearances, Dr Fortuno is actually a video slot, and it ultimately works as such.

Across the reels are the lower paying symbols which consist of various human organs pickling inside colored glass jars, which is a welcome break from the usual Aces and Kings. There are also four characters, the Water Witch, the Night Twins, the Fire Head and Dr Fortuno himself, who sits on the reels and acts as a stacked Wild. A top hat symbol completes the line up as the bonus symbol.

Gameplay

Yes, so it’s essentially just a slot game, and yes it comes down to the usual drill; set your bet and hit the spin button. But Dr Fortuno also has a lot of other stuff going on. If you can tear your eyes away from the brilliant graphics, you’ll see that it offers many an opportunity to hit it big on cash prizes. Here’s a breakdown of Dr Fortuno’s magical special features.

Wilds

The Dr Fortuno Wild is triple stacked and will nudge back when it becomes possible to make a winning combination. Achieve this and you’ll trigger the Wheel of Fortuno feature (see below).

For each Wild that forms part of your winning combination you’ll get a corresponding spin of the wheel. The Wild substitutes for all the regular symbols i.e. the pickled organs.

Wheel of Fortuno

This is an opportunity to spin a giant wheel and win an assortment of prizes, including the jackpot. You trigger this feature when you land a fully stacked Wild.

Once you’ve done this you’ll be ushered through some curtains where the wheel itself is revealed. You’ll then be in with a chance to win an instant cash prize, a multiplier or additional spins. If you’re really lucky you’ll hit on the big cheese – a chance to move to the next spinning wheel and play for the Fortuno Jackpot.

Fortuno Jackpot

This second wheel isn’t drastically different from the first, the prizes remain the same with the exception of the opportunity to trigger the jackpot itself. The jackpot value is progressive and you can monitor the prize on the left side of the grid.

Bonus Symbol

The top hat emblazoned with the word ‘bonus’ acts as a scatter in this game. If you land 3 of the hat symbols then you’ll trigger the Free Spins feature. More on this next.

Free Spins

Once you’ve triggered your Free Spins you’ll be given 10 free shots at accumulating some decent winnings. This also comes with the added boost of some bonus features, depending on the amount of scatters you land.

3 scatters will give you 1 bonus feature, 4 will give you 2 bonus features and 5 will give you 3 bonus features. And what are these bonus features?

All low paying symbols removed from the reels
A 2x multiplier is added on for the duration of the spins
More Wild symbols will materialize
5 or 10 extra Free Spins
All the high paying symbols turning Wild
Getting all 20 paylines to pay both ways

Payouts and Wagering Limits

The biggest win in Dr Fortuno can be found in the progressive jackpot, but you will need to jump through a few hoops to get it (pun intended). If you don’t hit it lucky with the slot’s jackpot, there are still plenty of other opportunities to rake in the cash.

Ranging from multipliers to flat out instant wins, this slot offers more than most in terms of surprise wins. The Free Spins feature, when triggered, is particularly generous, and you should cross your fingers for the version with a 2x multiplier on all wins.

The Night Twins (that’s the voluptuous, two-headed chick in thigh-high stockings) will top you up with 80x your bet if you manage to get 3 as part of a winning payline. 4 of the girls will take you up to 120x and 5 shoots for the stars with 400x. Essentially, the more heads the better.

Final Verdict

95%

I absolutely loved this slot, and I don’t say that lightly. I’m not sure if it was the gameplay so much as the entertainment factor that lured me in, but either way I had a great time. My only qualm is that the promise of great bonus features, while definitely present, weren’t as easy to take advantage of as I’d have liked. I also never made it to the jackpot despite having a few goes on the Wheel of Fortuno.

Despite this, and the fact that the RTP is a little lower than I would usually go for, there were still plenty of wins to be had. And because of all the action delivered by the bonus features, dry spins were far and few between. I gotta say, you’ll be glad you bought a ticket to this freak show.
