Theme and Background

Spartacus and Amazonia are our two main gladiator protagonists. And when you trigger a special feature you’ll have the pleasure of choosing one of them to act as your champion. We’ll go into more detail about this below.

These two fearsome warriors are joined on the reels by another 4 ferocious gladiators – Rectiarius, Provocator, Murmillio and Scissor.

The soundtrack on this slot is captivating and exciting, perfectly suited to the suspenseful mood of the game. Combined with the thematic crunch of crumbling stone and clashing weapons as the reels spin, it was definitely a ‘sound on’ experience for me.

Naturally, the setting is a gladiatorial arena in Ancient Rome. There’s no significant animation but the graphics are so well-crafted you don’t feel much need for all the extra diversions. The gladiators are joined on the reels by a roaring tiger (the Wild) and A, K, Q, J crafted out of chipped stone.

Gameplay

In terms of special features, Game of Gladiators works a little differently. While there is a variety, these are mostly triggered at random through a two main game functions. Read on to understand what I mean.

Primus Mystery Features

These are a collection of 5 randomly triggered features. Each is designed around an epic battle maneuver. Here’s what each feature can do:

Fame – A randomly-selected gladiator becomes the star, and you’ll want to land as many of him as possible in the subsequent spin.

Spear Attack – Between 3 and 6 of the tiger wilds get added to the reels.

Sword Attack – The first reel is replicated 2, 3 or 4 times, giving you a huge opportunity to make maximum winning combinations.

Net Attack – All matching gladiator symbols stick on the reels for one free re-spin.

Enraged – 2 of the ferocious tiger wilds will become fully stacked.

Arena Free Spins

The free spins in this slot take the form of an arena battle. Your fighter is pitted against the odds presented by each free spin, and against the other gladiators. As each opponent lands on the reels the symbols travel up to a battle meter and push you towards defeat. Victory can be obtained by landing your fighter more frequently.

To trigger the feature you’ll need to land 3 scatters (represented by a portcullis, or ‘gate’ to us non-historians) on reels 1, 3 and 5. At that point you’ll be asked to choose a champion, either Spartacus or Amazonia, and the Free Spins will begin. You’ll be given an unlimited amount of spins, which play out until the battle is either won or lost against four gladiators. Your chosen fighter also replaces the Scatter for the duration of the spins, giving you an increased opportunity for success. How much will you win? That will depend on how many groups of gladiators you defeated:

– 1 to 7 of Rectiarius pay between 0.5x and 12.5 x your bet

– 1 to 10 of Murmillio pay between 0.75x and 15 x your bet

– 1 to 10 of Provocator pay between 1x and 20 x your bet

– 1 to 11 of Scissor pay between 1.25x and 500 x your bet

There’s also a little more strategy applied to the battle. You want to hope your champion lands as many scatters as possible because if 2 scatters hit, 2 gladiator groups are attacked while also applying a 2x multiplier to your Battle prize.

Triple Scatter

However, if 3 scatters hit, 3 gladiator groups are attacked with a 3x multiplier applied. And does it matter which champion you choose? Yes. If you pick Amazonia then you will receive a victory prize between 20x to 100x your bet (plus the additional rewards based on defeated gladiators).

On the other hand, selecting Spartacus will re-trigger the battle for a final round, giving you the opportunity to beat more opponents and collect additional cash rewards.

Payouts and Wagering Limits

Game of Gladiators has the potential for big rewards, but this comes at the cost of battle. By this I mean that as a high volatility slot, you might need to pay out for a while before your efforts are rewarded. And those riches come at a maximum of 5,000 x your bet, which can be won during the Arena Free Spins feature.

This slot also comes with two separate paytables, one for the base game and one which is amped up for the Arena Free Spins feature. The lowest paying symbols are A, K, Q, and J, paying out just 1 x to 2.5 x your bet for 5 of a kind. The four gladiators will earn you anything from 10 x to 20 x your bet. But the top paying symbol comes in the form of the tiger wild, 5 of this fearsome beast and you’ll pull in 25 x your bet.

Final Verdict

81%

In writing, Game of Gladiators sounds complicated gameplay, but in practice it’s pretty simple to understand. The theme is fun and entertaining, there’s nothing like a spot of gladiator action on a quiet weekday to brighten things up.

Animation is limited, considering the special features center on battles to the death, but I like that they got creative while remaining true to the integrity of the slot.

How likely am I to return to the arena? It’s a fifty-fifty split. For the entertainment factor it would be a yes, but considering the fact that cashing in on those big wins requires time and budget, I think I’ll find my slot fix elsewhere next time. But when in Rome…
