The Smashing Biscuit

You remember how every teen movie from the 90s and early noughties featured an angst-ridden gaggle of high-schoolers banging out discordant rock music from some poor put-upon parent’s garage? The Smashing Biscuit, brought to us by Microgaming and Pear Fiction, is all about a youthful punk rock garage band, and I gotta tell you, there’s nothing amateur about these graphics.

The ultimate goal for The Smashing Biscuit is conquering Battle of the Bands. Let’s see if we can help Crunchy, Tiny and Soggy achieve their dream in this Medium volatility slot, hopefully pocketing a nice little profit along the way. Rock on!

The Smashing Biscuit - Theme and Background

The Smashing Biscuit is not just any slot, it’s a tale of the ambition and grit of three brothers trying to make it big in the dog eat dog world of punk rock. Ok, so it is just a slot, but it’s a really good one. The designers took the time to develop the three raggedy Biscuit brothers; Tiny, Crunchy and Soggy. We also really feel for the dad character who mooches about looking knackered by the racket his sons are generating. We get a taste of this via the slot’s soundtrack, which is overlaid by short riffs as you land particular symbols across the reels. The ultimate goal is to get the brothers to Battle of the Bands, which is also where the game’s maximum win can be unlocked.

In terms of symbols, everything’s pretty top notch. I don’t even mind the use of the generic A, K, Q and J because they’ve been so incredibly well designed to look like electric guitars that you’d have to be a total brute to imply their use was in any way the lazy option. The three Biscuit brothers (looking sufficiently grungy, complete with piercings and shockingly bad haircuts) and their long-suffering father join the Royals, along with a Battle of the Bands logo (the scatter) and a Wild symbol.

The Smashing Biscuit - Gameplay

The Smashing Biscuit strikes a lot of chords with its range of features. All themed around the joys of adolescent musical ambitions, there’s no way you can accuse the designers of straying from their subject. Here’s what you can expect.

Wilds

The Wilds in this slot substitute for all symbols except for the Battle of the Bands symbol. Aside from the staple Wild symbol, winning combinations with one of the band members will see them turn wild also. At this point you’re in with a chance for a full screen pay out, giving you a shot at that 500 x your bet maximum win.

Dad Bonus

This bonus only gets triggered during the base game. Dad will suddenly saunter out onto your screen, carrying his coffee mug and looking haggard, and invoke one of three special features with a few clicks of his remote control. All three are completely random and the player has no choice in what gets awarded. You could find yourself treated to:

An increase of the current win multiplier by a random number of notches
A guaranteed win for an unknown amount
Instant access to the Battle Of The Bands free spins feature

Win Multiplier

This is another base game feature that centers on a multiplier meter designed to look like an amplifier. The meter starts at X1 and has the potential to climb all the way up to X11. It bumps up a level with each winning spin, but will drop one with each losing spin. The only other way it gets increased is if Dad pops up and gives you a boost. This is great in theory, but the wins aren’t frequent enough to keep any decent momentum going. So you just slip up and down the scale constantly, without ever reaching the top (at least I didn’t). This is massively frustrating and almost certainly designed to keep players playing, long after they should have logged out.

The Smashing Biscuit Battle of the Bands symbol

Battle of the Bands Free Spins

Land three or more Free Spins symbols (these are represented by a Battle of the Bands logo) to kick off the Battle of the Bands competition and your free spins. Land three of these on reels 1, 3, and 5 to get 10 free spins and make a grab for as many winnings as possible. The only other way to trigger this is through the Dad Bonus. During the feature, landing one, two or three scatters will award an additional +2, +4 or +11 free spins respectively.

The Smashing Biscuit - Payouts and Wagering Limits

With a selection of bet sizes ranging from 0.20 to 100.00, theres room for everyone to play on this Medium volatility slot. High rollers may find themselves limited, but then again they would probably opt for a higher volatility slot anyway. The maximum win of 500 x your bet is a little disappointing, and you’re unlikely to walk away set for life with this slot, but it can be achieved in both the base game and during the special features.

At the most you’re looking at a payout of C$50,000 for a single spin, but this won’t be a common occurrence by any stretch of the imagination, largely due to some very stubborn special features. The RTP sits at 96.08% which is about average and means the payouts will come, but they won’t be particularly big. This is helped somewhat by the multiplier, but it’s not stable enough to really give you a shot at frequent substantial wins.

The Smashing Biscuit - Final Verdict

Final Verdict

73%

I thought The Smashing Biscuit was funny, well thought out and beautifully created. The designers made an effort to invest in a storyline and the characters were likable to a point that you forget you’re playing a slot.

What kept bringing me back to reality was the multiplier scale on the left. For some reason I found myself fixating on it, obsessed with trying to reach the top. In the end I simply felt frustrated by the game, furious by the seemingly impossible target set by the developers. This was compounded by features that were difficult to trigger, except for the Dad Bonus, however this entirely random feature leaves the player simply waiting around and hoping. So it’s a mixed bag of emotions for me, and I was left saddened by the fact that, try as I might, I couldn’t take the boys to the Battle of the Bands.
