Spina Colada Slot from Yggdrasil - Slot Review

A little rum, a little coconut cream, a little pineapple juice and a slot game – add them all together and what do you get? Spina Colada, of course! Yes, that is legitimately the name of the new slot from Yggdrasil. Don’t worry, the gameplay is much better than the name sounds.

Spina Colada is a normal video slot which comes with 5 reels, 25 paylines and is of medium variance. It has an RTP of 96.3%, and a bunch of special features we can’t wait to sink our teeth into. As usual, Yggdrasil has really delivered in terms of graphics and animations. It’s one of the few companies who manages to go toe to toe with giants like NetEnt when it comes to design. So, without further ado, let’s get started on this Spina Colada slot review.

Spina Colada - Theme and Background

So, tell us. Do you like pina coladas? Maybe getting caught in the rain? Making love at midnight? If so – you’ll really love the Spina Colada slot. And we promise to stop with the really bad pina colada jokes now. But, seriously speaking, this slot is all about living the tropical beach lifestyle. Envision a life where you’re in some colorful swimsuit or resort wear, sitting at a beach bar with a thatched roof, sipping on a delicious cocktail. Sounds like heaven.

Well, that’s the sort of image that Yggdrasil is going for with this Spina Colada slot. In fact, the background is of an amazing outdoor pool and the overall vibe of the slot is very tropical island living. Everything is of course designed and animated to grade A quality. We don’t know about you, but this seems like the perfect time of the year to be playing a slot like this one. Predictably, the symbols are of different fruit and cocktails. But who cares about what the symbols look like – it’s what they payout that matters. For that you’ll have to keep on reading.

Spina Colada - Gameplay

Spina Colada is a little bit complicated when it comes to gameplay, because it’s based on accumulated combos, multipliers and 4 different bonus features. You don’t have to understand every single last detail about it, obviously. But it’s always recommended that you learn about how a slot works before throwing your money at it. So, stick around and here goes nothing.

Freeze, Respin and Side Wins

When you hit 3 or more symbols of the same pattern, you’re automatically awarded one re-spin based on the same bet level. During that re-spin, the combo of symbols you hit are frozen in place. If you keep on landing the same symbol as the frozen ones, you’ll keep getting re-spins until finally there are none left. The slot will then cash-out. If you get other side hits during the re-spin round, these will cash out immediately. If you get more than 1 different type of 3-symbol pattern, the re-spin will be based on the highest paying symbol you land.

Column Multipliers

There are four possible multipliers: x2, x3, x4 and x5. You get only get them when you start filling up the reels from left to right. That means you can’t get the x3 multiplier before you get the x2 multiplier, and so on. The multiplier, whatever the number, won’t apply to the side wins that you get during re-spins or the main game.

4 Collectible Feature Caps

The Spina Colada slot comes with four different ‘bonuses’ which look like bottle caps. That’s why they’re called the ‘feature caps’. They’re basically the focal point of the slot, along with the multipliers because they’re the ones mostly responsible for getting you any decent wins. Each feature has four different ‘levels’ which you can fill up. This’ll become important later on. But the more levels you fill, the stronger the effect of the feature. All of these feature caps are triggered completely randomly, so there’s no telling when you’ll get them. Although, from our experience playing the game the ‘2nd Chance’ feature is much much rarer than the other 3 features.

Extra Wilds

Once triggered, this feature will place 1 wild symbol on both the 2nd and 3rd reels. It’ll also increase your chances of getting other wilds when spinning.
Full Line

The game will automatically give you two full levels of this cap when first starting slot. Like a ‘welcome bonus’ of sorts. Before the symbols appear on the reels, it adds 5 symbols to 1 of the pay lines. This guarantees at least one 5-of-a-kind win.

Free Spins

Free spins are triggered once you fill up any one of the caps feature up to the fourth level. You’ll be awarded 4 free spins with that caps bonus activated throughout. The really awesome part of the free spins round is that every spin is a guaranteed win.

Spina Colada - Payouts and Wagering Limits

Looking at the paytable, the payouts on Spina Colada are pretty decent. Better that some other Yggdrasil slots, that’s for sure. Our main issue with Spina Colada is that the caps features are not that frequently triggered, and they’re the feature that gives this slot its big wins. We found ourselves running out of money fast just playing around on the main game before we got enough of the caps to make our spins really worth our while. And you really have to work at getting those free spins (and just 4 of them at that). We’d suggest to really low-ball your bet until you’ve got most of the caps features, and at a minimum of level 2. Then you can start betting high. This might be super annoying because it means you can’t auto-spin, but hang it there because it’ll pay off.

That said – once we did trigger quite a few of the caps feature – the really huge cash prizes started rolling in. We got about three big wins and a super mega big win within about 50 spins of each other. Still, be careful of that high volatility. It could eat up your entire bankroll in the blink of an eye.
