Sticky Bandits Wild Return

This is the re-launch of the original Sticky Bandits slot, and this time the troublesome twosome are packing a third member of the gang. But is three a crowd, or does it spell bigger wins? Well, with 5 reels and 40 paylines and a top win of 1,145 x your bet, it certainly indicates some decent potential. But winning big often has a lot more to do with frequency rather than just lump sum random wins, and that’s going to come down to the special features.

So let’s take a walk on wild side with this trio of desperadoes, to find out if was worth coming back for round 2.

STICKY BANDITS WILD RETURN - Theme and Background

Set to the twangs of country and western music, this slot has been designed with impeccable skill. Something I’ve come to view as a trademark of Quickspin slots. They invest a lot of time into developing the theme, with an attention to detail that really elevates the game. The design is completed by subtle movements in the backdrop that keep the things dynamic and immersive.

Across the reels are a set of themed symbols like a humidor and cigars, a bourbon decanter and tumbler, and our three bandits, 2 male and a very alluring female whose pout is clamped down over a cuban cigar. There’s also a Wild, Sticky Wild and Bonus Scatter in play. All these symbols are rounded off by A, K, Q, and J Royals, which have been designed up nicely to blend in with the theme. Upon triggering either of the slot’s two special features, the game is moved to a brand new room packed full of additional details, further increasing the game’s entertainment power.

STICKY BANDITS WILD RETURN - Gameplay

Sticky Bandits: Wild Return only has 2 special features and neither of them went very far toward endearing me to the slot. Read on to find out why.

Quick Slot Bonus

This randomly triggered feature will come around when the symbol of an old-style slot machine lands on reel 5 during the base game. This won’t happen too often, but when it does the slot machine symbol will spin, landing on the number 1, 2 or 3. The number you end up with indicates the amount of spins you’ll be awarded for the feature. You’ll then enter the game, where your spins are played out, and you’ll be paid based on the landing combinations of 3 symbols:

3 number 7 symbols pay out 500 x
3 horseshoe symbols pay out 80 x
3 BAR symbols pay out 20 x
3 cherry symbols pay out 8 x
2 cherry symbols pay out 6 x
1 cherry symbol pays out 4 x

The combinations mean that more times than not you’ll receive a decent prize once you trigger the feature. And the odds of achieving the feature’s top prize of 500 x is fairly attainable

Lucky Shot Free Spins Bonus

Land 3 Bonus Scatter symbols (the skull and pistol) to trigger your free spins. This feature is also where the slot’s top prize of 1,145 x your bet can be achieved. Be warned that this could take a very, very long time. And what do you get for your efforts? Well, a rather disappointing 7 Free Spins. There are no multipliers in play, which really reduces your chances for a big win. This is tampered somewhat by the inclusion of Sticky Wilds. After each spin, if any symbol position is occupied by any of the 3 bandits, a random position will be marked by a lucky shot.

If the symbol that lands in the marked position is filled by a bandit symbol, then that bandit will turn sticky. Quite frankly this is a really tough way to reward a player, and my experience with the feature resulted in such a small win that I was left reeling with intense displeasure.

Sticky Bandits Wild Return - Payouts and Wagering Limits

The top paying symbol is the female bandit, as 3, 4 or 5 on a payline will dole out 0.75, 1.5 or 10 times your bet. Fortunately, she lands often enough to noticeably boost base game wins. There’s also a regular wild symbol that pays out at the same rate as the female bandit.

The Quick Slot Bonus feature is an opportunity to cash out up to 500 x your bet, and the odds of achieving this aren’t too astronomical. If you’re spinning at the maximum stake of 100 per spin, you could be walking away with a whopping C$50,000.

The Free Spins feature is where the game’s top win of 1,145 x your bet is unlocked, but this is a long shot to say the least. Not only is the feature hard to trigger, but it’s also hard to get it to pay out, with the majority of your free spins likely achieving no payouts at all.

Payouts are helped along by Massive Symbols which, when paired with an adjacent Wild, can go some way towards compensating your spend. The top paying female bandit can appear as a 3 x 3 Massive symbol of reels 2 and 5. The other two bandits can appear on the same reels but as smaller 2 x 2 Massive symbols.

Sticky Bandits Wild Return - Final Verdict

Final Verdict

72%

I’ll be the first to admit that this slot’s excellent theme and design initially distracted me from the fact that it’s a very difficult game to extract value from. The wins during the base game were just frequent enough to keep you hooked, but not large enough to actually generate a real profit. The wins derived from the two special features were much smaller than I expected, and both have the very real ability to not pay out at all.

On the plus side, it won’t cost you much to play, and if you can land the 500 x payout in the Quick Slot Bonus, it could be worth the gamble.
