The Equalizer

Warning: This slot has nothing to do with the Denzel Washington movie.

Ever get nostalgic for the days when slots still looked like slots? If so, you’re about to be very pleased with Red Tiger Gaming’s latest offering.

The Equalizer, which gets its name from the mechanism responsible for managing audio frequency, throws things back with neon-style lighting and remastered classic graphics like BAR and diamonds. All this is set into the vibe of an 80s discotheque with a banging retro soundtrack. With an RTP of 96.18%, expanding reels and an exciting array of special features, it also represents classic slot value.

It’s great to strip away the bells and whistles and get back to a pure slot

The special features are significant and very rewarding, easily building on top of each other

The Medium to High volatility means decent payouts at fairly regular intervals

There’s no jackpot so your spend doesn’t reach its fullest potential

The theme can start to wear thin after a while, and the music isn’t for everyone

I was hoping it would be a little easier to trigger free spins, considering the bonus features rest on these

Theme & Background

The Equalizer strips away all the bells and whistles that come with most slots these days. That means no movie themes, adventure romps or fantastical creatures.

If you’re a bit of purist then feel free to breathe a sigh of relief because this slot is all about old school classics. The grid is a nod to the original slot machines housed in dive bars and discos, embracing lurid lighting and flashing symbols. 80s tunes blare out of the giant speakers of a boombox, which will make you want to don a white suit and cruise around in a gold Lamborghini Countach (which also happens to be one of the symbols in play).

Across the reels are a delightful blend of classic slot machine symbols such as BAR, diamonds and stars. These are set against a backdrop of a New York-style night skyline, and bolstered by an equalizer tirelessly pulsing to the beat.

Overall, Red Tiger Gaming kept things simple yet immersive. Even after I decided to mute the game, I couldn’t help but hum the Miami Vice theme tune, and reminisce being in some bar in my youth, throwing a few coins into the resident slot machine. And despite the sound and picture becoming a bit humdrum after a while, I forgave it in exchange for the good memories it conjured up.

Gameplay

As with any self-respecting slot this decade, The Equalizer is responsive on all devices. However, I found that it looks best on mobile where it fills the screen delightfully. So once you’ve loaded it up and settled in for a slot session, what kind of action can you expect?

Expanding Reels

Although expanding reels aren’t a new feature, they’re often executed poorly. Thanks to Red Tiger Gaming’s skill, The Equalizer is one of the well designed ones. The grid can completely extend to seven reels with six rows. And when this happens the graphics and animations are really something to look at. During the main game, the machine will generally only partially extend, but once you hit a free spin you can look forward to playing at the maximum number of reels and paylines.

Wilds

The Equalizer also has the added bonus of incorporating Wilds. If you land a Wild symbol on any of the reels, these can randomly multiply from a single symbol to a stacked Wild, covering up to six symbols. This is a huge opportunity to rake in some coins.

Free Spins

There’s a Free Spin symbol on three of the reels. If you turn up trumps with three Free Spin symbols then you get 10 free spins each time. I love a good free spin session as much as the next person and The Equalizer makes it worth the show by expanding to its maximum size with seven reels, six rows and 60 paylines. It completes the show with the appearance of two huge speakers, appearing on either side of the slot. Because any Wilds remain on the reels during the free spins, the sound waves from the speakers move these around at random to significantly increase your chances of winning.

Spin Scatters

And because most of the bonus wins in The Equalizer are centred around free spins, they really up the ante by incorporating a Spin Scatter symbol, which appears during free spins. Each time it does, you’re granted an extra free spin. Not bad huh?

Payouts and Wagering Limits

As usual the different symbols across the reels carry individual values. The Lamborghini Countach, as you might expect, is the most valuable. The card suits are the least valuable symbols with a maximum win of 240 coins if you land seven identical symbols.

In addition to the Lamboghini, there are also big wins to be had if you can land seven symbols of the star, BAR, the deck and the diamond. Score one of these and you’ll pocket between 450 and 900 coins. The Lamborghini symbol and slot machine pay a whopping 1,500 coins for seven identical symbols, so there’s really a lot to play for with The Equalizer.

You can easily adjust your bets on the user-friendly panel, which allow you to play from as little as 0.20 coins, all the way up to 100 coins, depending how many spins you want to get for your money. With up to 10,000 times your bet up for grabs, taking this trip back to the 80s could be very rewarding indeed.

Final Verdict

85%

The Equalizer isn’t exactly groundbreaking in terms of design, but it does incorporate some really unique hidden features. The speakers bouncing the Wilds across the reels was a really fun addition that turned out to increase my win considerably. The theme, while initially pleasing and nostalgic, did get a bit tired after a while because there wasn’t much variance. Because The Equalizer is Medium to High volatility it presents a great opportunity for pretty decent winnings, significantly helped along by the bonus free spins and increased odds presented by the expanding reels.
