Ever watched a Disney movie called Coco? Well, this slot from Gaming Realms is just like that. Except instead of a boy on a quest to reunite with his grandfather and kickstart a singing career, we’re adults on the hunt for an unexpected fortune. Slightly less wholesome, but equally entertaining.

Running on a beautifully designed up grid across 5 reels and 10 paylines, this slot is packing some interesting features that add a layer of strategy to the usually solely luck-based slots. But will you be remembered on dia de los muertos, or will your candle burn out before you can walk away a winner?

Pay of the Dead - Theme and Background

The theme of this slot is dia de los muertos (or Day of the Dead), a Mexican feast traditionally celebrated on the second day of November. Although it may sound fairly macabre, the idea is to remember loved ones that have passed. It’s believed that by remembering them, we can keep them alive in the afterlife. So, despite the unwavering collection of painted skulls and outfitted skeletons, this is by no means a ghoul fest.

Pay of the Dead is a slot that adopts the theme perfectly, fully adorned with beautiful artwork and an excellent soundtrack to keep you in the spirit of things. The reels are bordered by vibrant flowers and draped with colorful bunting. In fact, color seems to be a primary feature with this slot, and even the skulls that litter the reels have adopted festive accessories. These skull symbols (of which there are 5 types) are joined by a chihuahua wearing a Mexican wrestling mask (this is our Wild), 3 different trios of candles (our Scatters), and a heavily made up undead female (who you only have to worry about during the bonus round). The remaining symbols are A, K, J, 10, which have been crafted out of various bones to blend nicely with the theme.

Pay of the Dead - Gameplay

Three is generally considered a lucky number. And on this lucky day when deceased loved ones are remembered, you have the opportunity to benefit from three special features.

Pay of the Dead Chihuahua Wild

Lucky Multiplier Wilds

The chihuahua head symbol is our Wild for this slot, and besides looking super cute, its also there to secure some potentially big wins. In the way of a normal Wild it can substitute for all adjacent symbols except the Scatter candle symbols.

But if you successfully make a winning combination with the Wild then you’ll also be give the opportunity to choose between 1 of 3 skulls, each concealing a different multiplier. The multiplier is either 2 x, 3 x or 10 x. Whichever you uncover will be what your final payout will be multiplied by.

Pay of the Dead Free Spins Symbol

Free Spins

Despite this being a Free Spins bonus feature, of which I’m certain you’ve experienced many, Pay of Dead has designed its version a little differently. The Scatter (which triggers the feature) comes in 3 variations (red, blue and mixed), and these appear only on reels 1, 2 and 3. Depending on which color scatter combination you land, you’ll trigger a different version of the bonus. What’s always the same is that you need to land 3 Scatters in order to trigger the free spins. Also, with any version of the feature you have access to unlimited free spins.

Depending on which Scatter combination you land, you can look forward to the following bonus features:

  • Red Candle Scatters – Unlimited free spins + 4 lives + a multiplier up to 10 x
  • Blue Candles Scatters – Unlimited free spins + 3 lives + a multiplier up to 5 x
  • Mixed Candles Scatters – Unlimited free spins + 2 lives + a multiplier up to 2 x

Each life is represented by a candle, which sit lighted at the top of the grid during the feature. As long as you have at least one candle burning, your spins will go on indefinitely. The candles are only snuffed out if the symbol of an undead woman land on the reels. To balance out this negative jolt, each time you lose a life, the multiplier is increased up to the maximum that your version of the free spins feature allows.

You can also increase the number of times you unlock this feature if you’re prepared to risk the stakes (see next).

Pay of the Dead Red Hot Respins

Red Hot Respins

It’s intensely frustrating when you land 2 out of 3 Scatters, failing to activate that coveted bonus feature. In this slot you’ll be given another chance – at a price of course. You’ll be offered the opportunity to respin the reel with the missing Scatter at a price that will be calculated based on your current stake. You can respin as many times as you like, but take care to calculate the potential winnings from the special feature to ensure that your costs of activating it will be covered.

Pay of the Dead - Payouts and Wagering Limits

The highest value ordinary symbol is the green painted skull, this is followed by the sombrero wearing skull. The third and fourth most valuable are the pink skull and the blue skull, respectively. Outside of base game symbols the Wild is the most valuable, offering players up to 10 x any winning combination. Pay of the Dead gives you the ability to play from a minimum of 0.20 per slot spin.

Additionally you also can include all 20 lines to wager a bet up to 50.00. During the base game, payouts are very low, usually making up about 25% to 50% of your stake. This loss can be recouped with the Wild feature, particularly if you’re lucky enough to hit on that 10 x multiplier. The Free Spins feature is also a great place to rake back your spend and take home some cash, but it will also depend on which version you unlock and how often you land the undead female symbol.

If you’re smart with your strategy you could leverage the respin feature to keep triggering those free spins, but you’ll have to take care you don’t find yourself in deeper than you expected.

Pay of the Dead - Final Verdict

Final Verdict

Pay of the Dead

From an entertainment and design aspect, Pay of the Dead is a fantastic slot. I also thoroughly enjoyed the special features which were creative and immersive. In practice, there’s definitely decent money to be won, although 10,000 x your bet is probably a little bit of a big ask.

I didn’t like the fact that the free spins feature came in three levels, I feel that if you successfully triggered it then you should have access to its full potential. This was slightly tempered by the fact that it can be triggered more often than usual with the Respin feature, if you’re willing to put your money on the line of course. Give Pay of the Dead a whirl, after all, on dia de los muertos anything can happen.
